- Seismic Design
- Finite Elements and its Applications
- Structures Dynamics
- Numerical Methods
Using MATLAB, the students of Structures Dynamics, Seismic Design, and Finite Elements and its Applications created sophisticated numerical analysis with programs that they themselves made. The speed with which they learned to use MATLAB was amazing, and it only took them three tutorial sessions to achieve it!
Teams of two or three students carried out diverse work such as:
- Calculation of the dynamic response of systems with one degree of freedom using different methodologies (convolution, Fourier, equations of state, exact integration by sections, integration by Newmark method)
- Confection of a program that resolves the problem of characteristic values of frame structures of any number of vain and levels
- Calculation of the seismic response of systems of many degrees of freedom using the numerical integration method of Newmark
- Creation of a structural analysis program using the finite elements method
During the Third Didactic Experiences Show (November 3-7, 2003), a group of four students of the Mechanics of Solids built an electronic device that emits a beam of light to measure the vertical displacement of a beam simply supported when it is impacted by a steel ball placed at a certain height.
These few examples prove the potentiality of MATLAB to solve engineering problems of different levels of complexity and I have no doubt that it is a tool that any educator should have to support the subjects they teach.
