At Ohio State University, all freshmen students participate in the First-Year Engineering Program, where they learn basic engineering skills, and about various engineering disciplines. In about a quarter of the program, the students learn MATLAB. The idea is to introduce MATLAB early, and then have the students use it in their other classes.
I have been involved with the First-Year Engineering Program since it started five years ago. One of my contributions was to develop the MATLAB module. Within this effort, I wrote a book, "MATLAB: An introduction with Applications," published by Wiley (ISBN 0-471-43997-5) that introduces MATLAB to new students in engineering. The book starts with simple arithmetic operations and then covers arrays (creation and mathematical operations), script files, plotting, user-defined functions, programming, applications such as curve fitting and interpolation, and applications in numerical analysis. The book includes many tutorials, sample problems, and homework problems in science and engineering.
The introduction of MATLAB in the engineering curriculum provides a means for improving the education of new engineers, including solving problems, presenting solutions, and making simulations.
