University of Colorado
Academic Department: Aerospace Engineering
Course Name: Computer-Aided Control Systems Design Using MATLAB® [ASEN 4238-4248]
Dr. Mackison taught the graduate sequence on control systems from 1980 to 1990. In 1991 he introduced a graduate/senior-level course entitled “Computer-Aided Control Systems Design Using MATLAB.”
His research focuses on applying advanced optimal control and estimation methods to a variety of aerospace controls.
“As a MATLAB user for nearly 25 years, I’ve trained a couple of generations of MATLAB users for industry and served as the MATLAB point person at Ball Aerospace and the University of Colorado. When I started using MATLAB, I stopped using C and Fortran.
“One of my early students, who joined an aerospace company, was assigned as his first task the verification and validation of an aircraft flight control system. He asked his boss for the location of a PC and MATLAB software so that he could get to work. His boss replied, ‘Your what?’ The student then called me for information on getting MATLAB at his company.”
