Dr. Emami teaches Engineering Design to second-year students in the Engineering Science Program. Teams of students work on open-ended design projects and carry on the entire process of design, fabrication, integration, and testing of mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, sensor, microcomputer, and software subsystems.
First, students develop a multi-disciplinary, real-time model of their system using an object-oriented, hardware-in-the-loop simulation facility. They use a GUI to automatically generate the mechatronic model using a third-party modeling approach. The model is then linked to Simulink and Real-Time Workshop for analysis and real-time refinement. In the final stage, students use xPC Target to load the code on a real-time kernel via I/O boards and link different pieces of hardware, from a PIC microcontroller to DC and stepper motors and solenoids, to encoders and sensors.
