Dr. Zee is the managing director of the UTIAS Space Flight Laboratory. He teaches the Microsatellite Design Project course (AER1520/AER1521) and supervises graduate students with thesis topics in nanosatellite missions and microspace technology development.
The UTIAS Space Flight Laboratory engages teams of graduate students in real spacecraft projects. Students design, build, launch, and operate their own satellite in less than two years, or the time it takes to get a Masters degree, making the program unique in Canada. The UTIAS SFL maintains a full-time staff of highly trained professionals that mentor students on a daily basis. Students receive hands-on training in space systems engineering.
Dr. Zee explains, "MATLAB and Simulink are integral to the satellite design process. The tools help with attitude control design, image processing, mission analysis, and other engineering activities. They are also powerful general-purpose tools that save our students time by allowing them to focus on the higher-level tasks of analysis and design rather than on creating their own tools to support their calculations."
