Problem: Load MRI images into MATLAB

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a technique used to produce high quality images of the inside of the human body, quite often of the brain. Using brain images acquired by MRI often allows physicians and engineers to analyze the brain without the need for invasive surgery.

Although MRI helps decrease the need for surgery, often the acquisition of MRI images is not enough for biomedical engineers to fully analyze different aspects of the brain. With appropriate image analysis techniques, a biomedical engineer can use one small set of MRI images and manipulate them to analyze some interesting facets of the brain.

Task
An MRI technician has acquired horizontal MRI images of a healthy young patient, a slice of which is shown in Figure 1. These images will serve as the healthy model in an upcoming Clinical Trial where diseased brains will be imaged. As the biomedical engineer on the project, your job will be to load these images of the healthy brain into MATLAB and perform the necessary image analysis. Specifically, you will:

  1. Load the mri.mat file.
  2. Display all of the frames in one figure.
  3. Isolate frame five and display in individual figure.
  4. Show all frames of MRI data as a movie.
  5. Obtain sagittal slice image of brain and show as individual image.
