MATLAB & Simulink Student Version

Frequently Asked Questions

General Activation Information

Q. What is activation?
A. Activation is a secure process that verifies licensed student users. This process validates the serial number and ensures that it is not used on more systems than allowed by the MathWorks Software License Agreement.
Q. Why does The MathWorks require that students activate their licenses?
A. Product activation enables The MathWorks to reduce unauthorized use and casual copying of MathWorks products.
Q. Who is required to activate their software?
A. All users of MATLAB & Simulink Student Version are required to activate their software.
Q. What happens if I don't activate MATLAB & Simulink Student Version?
A. You must activate your Student Version software within 30 days of installing it on your personal computer. After 30 days, software that has not been activated will not work.
Q. What items are required to complete the activation process?
A. To activate MATLAB & Simulink Student Version you need an e-mail address and product serial number. In addition, users who did not provide proof of student status when they purchased the software will need to do so during activation.
Q. Do I need the Student Version disc in my drive to use MATLAB?
A.

No. As of Release 14 SP3 (December 2005), the MATLAB & Simulink Student Version disc does not need to be in your disc drive to start MATLAB.

Q. Do I need to activate all my MATLAB & Simulink add-on products, including toolboxes and blocksets?
A. No. Student Version add-on products work only on activated Student Version software. You need to to activate only the core Student Version product. (Student Version add-ons are incompatible with previous releases of Student Version and with our professional products.)
Q. Can I upgrade from older versions of MATLAB & Simulink Student Version?
A. Student Version upgrades are not offered at this time. If you want to use the current MATLAB & Simulink Student Version release, you must purchase a copy and activate your software. You can install the current version on a machine with an older version. The older version will function properly, but may require the disc in the drive for startup.
Q. How many computers can I activate?
A. Activation with a given serial number can occur on no more than two computers simultaneously.
Q. For how long is my Student Version software activated?
A. Your Student Version software is activated indefinitely. However, after four years you may need to re-submit proof of student status to activate it on a new machine. After you graduate you will need to purchase a professional license.
Q. How do I move Student Version software to a new machine?
A. The main page of your MathWorks Account lists your activated Student Version software. Click the Activate Another Machine link, and follow instructions. If the link does not appear, contact customer service at service@mathworks.com for information on how to move a license to a new computer.
Q. Where can I find the Software License Agreement?
A. You can find the license agreement on the DVD. On Linux or Mac, the file is named unix/license.txt. On Windows, it is called win32/license.txt. You can also view the license agreement within MATLAB via the About box.

The Activation Process

Q. How long will it take to activate my product?
A.

If you purchase your software at a retail location in North America and provide proof of student status at the time of purchase, activation takes a few minutes. (You also need to have an Internet connection on your computer. If not, see instructions for off-network activation.)

If you purchase Student Version either online or outside of North America, you need to submit your proof of student status and receive verification of that status (Authentication) before you can activate your software. If you have an Internet connection, you can install the software and temporarily activate it for up to 30 days. Submit your proof of student status as soon as possible within the 30 days. Once your proof is verified, activation takes a few minutes. If your computer does not have Internet access, see see instructions for off-network activation..

Q. What does activation involve?
A.

Activation requires you to complete these steps:

  1. Provide registration information by creating a MathWorks Account.
  2. Provide your serial number and the machine ID for the computer on which you install the software.
  3. Submit proof of student status (see acceptable forms of proof) if you did not do so at the time of purchase. (The MathWorks will verify your proof of student status to allow full activation.)
  4. Complete the activation process by following the instructions e-mailed to you once your proof of student status has been verified.
Q. What is the difference between registration and activation?
A. Activation refers to the entire process of validating legal use of the software, while registration refers to the part of the process that collects student information to associate with a particular serial number.
Q. Why do I need to create a MathWorks Account?
A. The MathWorks Software License Agreement states that each license may serve only one student. Information you provide in your MathWorks Account is used to ensure your Student Version serial number is associated only with you. Additional benefits of establishing a MathWorks Account include access to newsletters, ability to view and report bugs online, and the ability to purchase products online.
Q. How do I activate my software?
A. The quickest way to activate your software is to use the activation prompts that follow product installation. These prompts will guide you through the activation process. If you prefer, you can activate your software online.
Q. Where do I find my serial number?
A. Your serial number is a 20-digit number located on the disc packaging. After you register your software you can view your serial number from your main account page.
Q. Which versions of MATLAB & Simulink Student version require activation?
A. All versions beginning with Release 14 SP3 (December 2005) require activation. Earlier versions do not need to be activated, but may require the disc in the drive for startup.
Q. Can I still use my software while waiting for my proof of student status to be verified?
A.

If you have Internet access you may install your software and you will be able to use it for up to 30 days while waiting for your proof of student status to be verified.

Proof of Student Status (Authentication)

Q. Who can purchase MATLAB & Simulink Student Version?
A. Any student who is currently enrolled in a degree-granting college, university, high school, or continuing education program is eligible to purchase Student Version. All students must submit proof of student status, and all are subject to the same terms of use.
Q. What is proof of student status?
A.

Proof of student status is documentation that confirms that you are currently a student enrolled in a degree-granting institution. • A valid, unexpired date (The date on the document must show that you are currently enrolled as a student.)
Q. How do I submit proof of student status if I did not provide it when I purchased my software?
A.

The quickest way to submit your proof of student status is to provide a digital image of your document when prompted during the activation process that follows installation of the product. You can also use your MathWorks Account to submit proof of student status online, or receive instructions on how to fax, e-mail, or mail a copy of your document.

Next Step: Submit my proof of student status.

Q. Who needs to provide proof of student status?
A.

Everyone who purchases MATLAB & Simulink Student Version must provide proof of student status prior to product activation. In retail locations in North America, you must show proof of student status at the point of sale. If you buy the Student Version online or outside North America, you must provide proof of student status prior to activation.

Q. Why do I have to provide proof of student status?
A. According to the MathWorks Software License Agreement, only currently enrolled students may use the software. Proof of student status ensures that only students who are currently enrolled in school are using MATLAB & Simulink Student Version.
Q. How long do I have to wait to receive verification of my proof of student status?
A. Typically, you are notified of verification within five business days after we receive your proof of student status. To prevent delays, make sure that you submit one of the approved documents with a clear, unexpired date.
Q. What if I am unable to provide proof of student status?
A. Only current students are eligible to use MATLAB & Simulink Student Version. If you are not a student, learn more about professional licenses.
Q. I received a letter or e-mail saying my proof of student status was successfully verified. How do I complete the activation process?
A.

If you have an Internet connection, you can retrieve your license via the Student Version activation program.

  • Install the software and follow the prompts on the screen to register your software.
  • If the software is already installed, launch the software and follow the prompts on the screen.

If your computer does not have an Internet connection, see instructions for off-network activation.
