My MathWorks Account

Frequently Asked Questions

General MathWorks Account Information

Q. What do I do if I have forgotten my MathWorks Account password?
A. If you forget your MathWorks Account password, you can request that it be sent to you. Your password will be e-mailed to you immediately.
Q. Can I use someone else's MathWorks Account?
A. No. You should only use your own MathWorks Account. These accounts are not transferable and are designed to stay with you throughout your career. Anyone can create a MathWorks Account in just a few minutes.
Q. Do I need to provide my MathWorks Account to get technical support?
A. Your MathWorks Account is not required to receive technical support; however, we recommend that you provide your e-mail address to expedite your inquiry.

Before submitting a Technical Support Request, search our solutions database, technical notes, and documentation. The database is updated several times each week; it is the same database that our technical support engineers will use to answer your question.
Q. If I have more than one MathWorks Account, how do I consolidate them?
A. If you have more than one MathWorks Account, send e-mail to service@mathworks.com. Provide all your MathWorks Account e-mail addresses and let us know which one you would like to keep.
Q. Do I need a MathWorks Account to view Bug Reports?
A. Yes. You can search for Bug Reports, but to view the details of a report or to see the status of bugs in a particular release, you will need a MathWorks Account. To learn more about Bug Reports, view the Bug Reports FAQ.
Q. What are the benefits of having a MathWorks Account?
A. The benefits vary depending on what type of user you are. View the MathWorks Account Benefits for more details.

Professional Software Users

Q. If I change companies, do I need to create a new MathWorks Account?
A. No. Your MathWorks Account stays with you even if you change companies. Please advise us of your address change by editing your profile.
Q. When I buy MATLAB®, do I automatically receive a MathWorks Account?
A. A MathWorks Account will be automatically created and sent to the administrator on a new license if that person doesn't already have one. Additional users of that license may create an account for themselves, and then associate themselves with the license.
Q. What is the difference between a licensed end user and a non-licensed end user?
A. Any contact associated with a professional license for MATLAB® and its related products from The MathWorks is referred to as a licensed end user. licensed end users may have additional benefits, depending on the role they have on the license.

Non-licensed end users include anyone not associated with a professional license from The MathWorks. MATLAB® & Simulink® Student Version users are considered non-licensed end users since they are using the non-professional, student version of our product(s).
Q. How do I associate myself with a license?
A.

The prerequisites for associating yourself with a license are:

  1. A valid license number (accessible from the MATLAB command line by typing "ver")
  2. A MathWorks Account (If you do not have one, click create account in the top navigation.)

To associate yourself with a license:

  1. In the License Center, click the Associate Me with a License button.
  2. Enter a valid license number and an e-mail address.
  3. Click Submit.
Q. Can the license administrator add an end user to a license?
A. Yes, the administrator and asset manager can add end users to a license via the License Center.  When you add a user to a license, the first name, last name, and e-mail domain you entered are used to check for an existing account. If an exact match is not found, a new account is created. (If the user already has one or more accounts under slightly different names, a new account will be created. Contact Customer Support to have accounts deleted.)
Q. What are the types of contacts associated with a license and what distinguishes one from another ?
A.

The MathWorks reserves four principal administrative contact designations on licenses: administrator, maintenance contact, asset manager, and update media recipient. Additionally, a multi-user license may have many licensed end users who use the software but typically are not involved in the installation or purchasing of the license.

In many cases, there is only an administrator for a license, and that person serves the role of all the other contact types. We have created the following administrative contact types for larger organizations where different people may be responsible for purchasing and installing software and receiving software maintenance renewals.

Administrator: The administrator manages end users and can perform license administration tasks in the License Center, such as assigning products on Group licenses. All MathWorks licenses require an administrator to serve as the main source of communication for the license. For an Individual license, the administrator is often also the end user.

Maintenance contact: The maintenance contact is the person who receives all software maintenance renewal quotes for specified licenses.

Asset manager: The asset manager is an optional contact on a license that has the same privileges as the administrator. There can be multiple asset managers on a license.

Update media recipient: The update media recipient is an optional contact on a license that receives all software media shipments (DVD) from The MathWorks for the license.

Licensed end user: Licensed end users are users of the product, but generally are not involved in purchasing, receiving, and installing the software.

Q. How do I change the contacts on my license?
A. You can make changes to the contacts on your license by filling out the appropriate form and submitting it to The MathWorks.
Q. How do I change permissions for my license to allow all licensed end users to download its products? As a licensed end user, how do I get access to the download files once permissions have been granted?
A. View the User Downloads Permission FAQ
Q. How do I make changes to my license, such as combining licenses or transferring products from one license to another?
A.

The License Center provides centralized access for license management information and tasks.  Depending on your role, you will be able to use the License Center to:

  • View information about all your licenses from a single user interface
  • Redesignate (transfer) products to Group Member licenses
  • Manage end-user information and set permissions
  • Manage the R2008a release software
  • Obtain pre-R2008a and PolySpace product passcodes

You can also request changes to your license by submitting a request to our Customer Service department.

Student Software Users

Q. Can I manage my Student Version products from the same MathWorks Account account as my professional software licenses?
A. No. You will need to maintain one MathWorks account for your Student Version products, and another in which you can associate yourself to other licenses. To activate Student Version products, you will be required to set the field "How will you use the software?" to 'Student Use'. This field will not be modifiable on a MathWorks account once you activate your first Student Version product. Additionally, on your non-student account 'Student Use' will not be an option once you associate that account with a non-student license.
Q. How do I register and activate MATLAB® & Simulink® Student Version?
A. View the Student Version Activation FAQ to learn more about activation.
Q. How do I retrieve my MATLAB® & Simulink® Student Version License File?
A. Your license file will be immediately available from the main page of your MathWorks Account once you successfully register and activate your product, and once your proof of student status has been verified. At this point you will see the Retrieve License File link.
Q. What is the difference between registration date and activation date?
A. The registration date is the date you provided to The MathWorks with your MATLAB® & Simulink® Student Version product serial number and your machine ID. The Activation date is the date your serial number, machine ID, and proof of student status were verified.
Q. Why don't I see Student Version products prior to Release 14 SP3 in the My Student Version Products area of my MathWorks Account?
A. The My Student Version Products table displays only those Student Version products that require Activation. Activation was introduced in Release 14 SP3 and is only required for the core MATLAB & Simulink Student Version software (not add-on products). The My Orders table displays a link to retrieve any add-on products and view information on Student Version products prior to Release 14 SP3 that were purchased in The MathWorks Web store.
