Simulink for Teaching Signal Processing: Bridging Theory and Practice - PreConference Session

Seminar Overview

Simulink is a graphical tool that enables visual design and simulation of signal processing systems. The use of Simulink models as an alternative to, or in conjunction with MATLAB, can significantly enhance student learning experiences. Participants will learn how to build and simulate models for signal processing systems, employ them for teaching in classroom environments and implement systems on hardware using Real-Time Workshop tools. The hands-on activities in this workshop will involve building pedagogic models to demonstrate signal processing applications. Although part of the presentation is geared towards educators, researchers looking to build and implement real-world signal processing systems should also benefit from this workshop.

Who Should Attend

Open to all university-affiliated conference attendees, especially educators.

There are only 20 seats available. These will be reserved for the first 20 registrants.

Seminar Highlights

Participants are expected to bring their own laptops. The MathWorks will provide the required software for the duration of the workshop. (Installation information to be forwarded a few weeks before the workshop).

Session Outline:

• On-ramp to modeling systems using Simulink

• Building and analyzing signal processing systems using the Signal Processing Blockset

• Interfacing Simulink with MATLAB

• Working with multi-rate systems and analyzing fixed point effects

• Building and using interactive models for teaching

• Implementing signal processing systems on a Texas Instruments Development Support Kit using Real-Time Workshop (Demonstration)

About the presenter:

Kirtan Modi works at The MathWorks as an Academic Training Engineer. His role involves delivering MathWorks product specific training to MATLAB and Simulink users in academia and industry, and developing content to help academic instructors leverage The MathWorks tools in teaching. Additionally, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Virginia, where his research emphasis is on applying communication theory and statistical signal processing to optical communication systems. Kirtan has a Master's in Electrical Engineering from West Virginia University and a Bachelor's in Electronics & Telecom engineering from the University of Pune, India. His research experience spans the areas of multi-user MIMO wireless communications, optical communications, networking and signal processing education while his teaching experiences are primarily in the areas of signal processing.

Apart from Kirtan, two Principal Developers will be present at the workshop to facilitate the discussion and answer any questions the participants may have.
