Job Summary

Combine your technical and creative skills to create graphics for MathWorks technical documentation.

As the Documentation Group’s sole technical illustrator, you will develop graphics standards for technical documentation by working closely with the Documentation Group’s graphics advisory team. You will apply these standards to both new and old illustrations to ensure consistency throughout the documentation. You will work closely with technical writers to help brainstorm ways to visualize technical concepts. You will also mentor technical writers who create simple graphics by responding to their graphics standards and tools questions and by offering graphics workshops.

Responsibilities

• Design, write, and maintain procedures, processes, and stylistic standards for the creation of illustrations in technical documentation.
• Update graphics to ensure that they follow graphics standards.
• Ensure that the graphics creation process produces professional quality output in online, PDF, and printed formats.
• Work with technical writers to create new graphics and update old ones.
• Train and help technical writers to create and update simple graphics.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical design training/experience
• 5 years experience creating user-friendly technical illustrations
• Background in graphic design concepts
• Expert at Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
• Comfortable with programming and technical concepts
• Familiarity with Macromedia (Adobe) Freehand
• Meticulous, with sharp attention to detail
• High degree of initiative
• Good time management and communication skills
• Understanding of graphic file formats

Plusses:
• Knowledge of web design
• Knowledge of localization and international issues in graphic design
• Familiarity with mathematical equations
• Knowledge of diagramming, e.g., UML, flow charts, Venn diagrams
