Building A Joystick Adaptor for the Data Acquisition Toolbox
by Roberto WaissmanOne way that MATLAB interfaces with the outside world is through the Data Acquisition Toolbox , which provides functionality for getting and sending data between MATLAB and data acquisition hardware. There is a software layer, called an adaptor, that links the Data Acquisition Toolbox to the data acquisition hardware.
This article describes how to create an adaptor for a joystick interface and for testing the adaptor using a joystick game. You can modify this procedure to build an adaptor for any data acquisition hardware you use that is not supported by the toolbox. The finished adaptor, the game we built to test it and the source code for the article are all available for download.

Maps Made Easy
by Walter StumpfSend email to Walter Stumpf c/o Russ Minkwitz
MATLAB's extensive collection of numerical methods and programming capabilities have led to applications that range from aerospace engineering to zoology. Many of these applications produce data that have a geographic context. The Mapping Toolbox makes it easy to create maps to display and analyze your data. This article will show you some new functions that make creating these maps even easier.

How do I make MATLAB 6 (R12) start up faster?
Many of the features in MATLAB 6 (Release 12) were added to improve performance and speed. However, there were tradeoffs that made MATLAB larger and may cause MATLAB to launch more slowly. Visit the following technical solution for workarounds that may speed the launch of MATLAB.

Why do my MATLAB 6 (R12) graphics run slowly, render piecewise
and incompletely or why do I get a segmentation violation?
These and other symptoms could happen when manipulating a plot, producing a 3D plot or producing a plot with a large number of data points. Even running BENCH or producing reasonably sized PCOLOR plots can lead to these events. If you are experiencing any of the problems mentioned above, please…
