Inside the MathWorks
The MathWorks Supports Student Competitions
Through sponsorship, donated software, technical support, and mentoring, The MathWorks supports two student engineering competitions: the Formula Student and Challenge X.
Formula Student is an annual European event organized by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Society of Automotive Engineers, and the Institution of Electrical Engineers, with numerous corporate sponsors. Student teams are challenged to design and fabricate a prototype car with high-performance acceleration, braking, and handling while remaining low in cost, easy to maintain, and reliable. Marketability is judged by factors such as aesthetics, comfort, and use of common parts.

The Challenge X teams visited The Mathworks in August for MATLAB and Simulink training. |
Challenge X is a three-year competition sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy. Student teams from across the U.S. re-engineer the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox, a fuel-efficient compact SUV. They must reduce energy consumption and decrease emissions while maintaining vehicle performance and utility features.
The MathWorks hosted a four-day training program for Challenge X participants in Natick, Massachusetts. Students were introduced to Model-Based Design while learning to use MATLAB and Simulink.
