The MathWorks Opens Office in Italy

The MathWorks extended its business into Italy's industrial center of Torino in January with the establishment of The MathWorks S.r.l. Teoresi S.r.l., a software reseller, represented The MathWorks in Italy from 1993 until early this year, when they transitioned all their MathWorks-specific services to The MathWorks S.r.l.

The new Italian office will grow to a staff of 25 and offer its customers training, support, sales, consulting, and a full-service Italian language Web site.

Social Mission helps 10-year-olds learn math

For more than 11 years, MathWorks employees have been helping the local community through a series of volunteering and donation programs This Social Mission Program sponsors numerous activities: an important one is tutoring students in a local elementary school.

Each school year, several MathWorks employees tutor fourth-grade students at the Potter Road Elementary School in Framingham, Massachusetts. The tutors focus specifically on students' math skills in preparation for the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS), a mandatory statewide assessment test. In addition to participating in weekly tutoring sessions at their school, students also pay a visit to The MathWorks headquarters in Natick. Here they are introduced to real-world applications of math fundamentals and are inspired to excel in their math studies.

This is the third year that The MathWorks has participated in the program, and the Potter Road School's principal, Maria Iglesias, credits the MathWorks volunteers with helping her students achieve considerable improvements in MCAS math scores.
