On the Cover

The Apollo spacecraft consisted of a lunar module (LM) and a comand service module (CSM). After the Apollo spacecraft orbited the Moon, the LM and the CSM separated. Our cover graphic shows the LM approaching the CSM after the lunar landing. Inside the LM are Commander Neil A. Armstrong and LM Pilot Edwin E. Aldrin Jr. The LM landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969, 30 years ago this summer.

The following inscription is engraved on a plaque attached to the LM: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind." This was signed by all of the engineers and scientists who helped to build the LM, including Dr. Richard J. Gran of The MathWorks. This issue of MATLAB News & Notes is dedicated to all those people.

The cover graphic is a composite of two NASA photographs. We acknowledge the National Space Science Data Center for these photographs.
