The MathWorks Introduces New Version of Bioinformatics Toolbox for MATLAB

The MathWorks today announced a new version of Bioinformatics Toolbox for MATLAB®, which enables com­putational biologists and research scientists to more effectively explore ideas, pro­totype new algorithms, and build applications for drug research, genetic engineering, and other genomics and proteomics projects. Among the many new features of Bioinformatics Toolbox 3.0 are new capabilities to improve analysis and visualization of microarray and mass spectrometry data to help accelerate the research and discovery process.

Bioinformatics Toolbox 3.0 brings together a unique combination of enhanced import, analysis and visualization capabilities that are particularly useful for biologists and researchers who work with microarray and mass spectrometry data.  Users can now perform more precise analysis of various forms of microarray data, including array-based comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), tiling, SNP, and gene expression arrays. 

Enhancements to Bioinformatics Toolbox allow users to normalize and clean microarray data, calculate gene expression, and perform circular binary segmentation and false discovery rate estimation. Bioinformatics Toolbox 3.0 includes visualization capabilities that enable users to plot chromosome ideograms with G-banding pattern.

Bioinformatics Toolbox 3.0 includes new functionality for mass-spectrometry data analysis that aligns mass spectra from multiple peak lists from LC/MS or GC/MS data set.  The MathWorks has also provided enhanced functionality in other areas such as graph theory and sequence analysis. Researchers can use these advanced visualization features to determine and view the shortest paths in graphs, test for cycles in directed graph, or find isomorphism between two graphs.  The new sequence analysis capabilities provide tools for estimating and visualizing the secondary structure diagrams of an RNA sequence.

Pricing and Availability

Bioinformatics Toolbox 3.0 is available immediately. U.S. list prices start at $1,000. MATLAB and Statistics Toolbox are required with Bioinformatics Toolbox 3.0 and are available separately.
