The MathWorks Showcases Model-Based Design at SAE World Congress 2006


CEO to Participate in Panel; Experts and Engineering Students to Present on Using MathWorks Tools in the Automotive Industry


NATICK, Mass. - (28 Mar, 2006)


Who:      The MathWorks, the world’s leading developer of software for
               technical computing and Model-Based Design for engineers
               and scientists in industry, government, and education; and,
               technology students from Virginia Tech, the Rose-Hulman 
               Institute of Technology, Michigan Technological University, and 
               University of Waterloo.

What:   • Jack Little, CEO of The MathWorks, will join 
               international and U.S. representatives to discuss new
               applications for vehicle electronics and telecommunications. 
            • Experts from The MathWorks will present papers about
               Model-Based Design for the automotive industry at the world’s
               largest meeting and exposition devoted to automotive engineering
               and product technology. 
            • Engineering students from the Challenge X competition will present
               papers that discuss using Model-Based Design and MathWorks tools 
               to reengineer a 2005 Chevy Equinox.

The MathWorks will share their expertise in using Model-Based Design for automotive applications during the SAE World Congress 2006 technical program.  Additionally, representatives will highlight the Company’s role in Challenge X, a three-year student competition that gives engineering schools an opportunity to participate in hands-on research and development with leading-edge automotive propulsion, fuels, materials, and emissions-control technologies. 

The MathWorks CEO, Jack Little, will participate in the following panel discussion:

  • Wednesday, April 5, 2:00 p.m., AVL Technology Theater
    The MathWorks CEO, Jack Little, will join executives from AAMP of America, BMW, ETAS Inc., Motorola, Inc., and Robert Bosch Corp. on a panel titled “New Applications for Vehicle Electronics and Telecommunications - Cutting Costs and Improving Customer Satisfaction.” (Session Code: ANNUAL106 ).

MathWorks experts will present the following technical papers:

  • Tuesday, April 4, 9:00 a.m., Room D2-09/10 
    Thomas Erkkinen of The MathWorks and Koos Zwaanenburg of ETAS will present a paper titled “A Seamless Implementation of Model-Based Design Applied to a New Fuel Control Feature for an Existing Engine ECU” as part of the Electronic Engine Controls (Part 3 of 9) - Rapid Prototyping session. (Session Code: P16 ).
  • Tuesday, April 4, 2:30 p.m., Room W2-61
    Elizabeth Callanan and Sameer M. Prabhu of The MathWorks will present a paper titled “Challenge X Mentoring: A Perspective on an Extraordinary Learning Experience” as part of the Developing New Technology Through Student Design Competitions session.

    Jon Friedman and Jason Ghidella of The MathWorks will present a paper titled “Using Model-Based Design for Automotive Systems Engineering - Requirements Analysis of the Power Window Example” as part of the Systems Engineering (Part 1 of 3) session. (Session Code: AE19 ).

    James Tung of The MathWorks will present a paper titled “Enhanced Test and Verification Capabilities Using Model-Based Design” as part of the Controller System Software Testing and Validation (Part 1 of 2) session. (Session Code: AE25 ).

In addition, engineering students from leading universities will present the following six technical papers focused on Challenge X as part of the Developing New Technology Through Student Design Competitions session (Session Code: P12):

    Marc Herniter and Zachariah Chambers of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will present a paper titled “Vehicle Model Development and Verification Using The MathWorks Simulink® and National Instruments Virtual Instrumentation.”

    Zachariah Chambers, Marc Herniter, Brian Roser, Todd Richard, and Clinton Anthony Hammes of the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology will present a paper titled “Use of New Technology in the Challenge X Competition.”

    John Beard, Paul Rosso, and Jason R. Blough of Michigan Technological University will present a paper titled “A Variable Displacement Engine with Independently Controllable Stroke Length and Compression Ratio.”

    Taylor Mali, Jennifer Marshall, Matt Stevens, Chris Mendes, Kuo-Feng Tong, Erik Wilhelm, Stephen Beckermann, Roydon Fraser, and Michael Fowler of the University of Waterloo will present a paper titled “Fuel Cell Hybrid Powertrain Design Approach for a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox.”
  • Tuesday, April 4, 5:15  p.m., Room W2-61
    John Beard, Rebecca Marie Trierweiler, Brigham R. Erickson, and Zac Tselios of Michigan Technological University will present a paper titled “Development of the MTU Automatic Shifting Manual Six Speed Transmission.”
