The MathWorks MATLAB 7.2 Now Available with Support for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

New Version Includes Capabilities for Time Series Data Analysis

MATLAB GUI - R2006a

The MATLAB development environment, now with support for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, lets users interactively analyze and visualize data, develop algorithms, and manage projects.

NATICK, Mass. - (18 Apr 2006)

The MathWorks today announced that MATLAB 7.2, the new version of its flagship product MATLAB® , includes support for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. MATLAB 7.2 offers users the ability to access and manipulate larger data sets and run larger, more data intensive applications by taking advantage of the large address space available with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. Additionally, new features for analyzing and visualizing time series data are included in MATLAB 7.2

Technological advances in many engineering and scientific applications, such as image processing and radar analysis, have drastically increased data complexity and volume. MATLAB 7.2 allows users to leverage the benefits of 64-bit computing with applications involving larger data sets and computationally intensive tasks. For example, applications such as flight test data analysis, bioinformatics analysis of genetic data, and geophysical image processing, which often involve data sets greater than the 2 GB of available memory of 32-bit systems, can benefit from the increased memory available in 64-bit MATLAB.

"Windows XP Professional x64 Edition offers customers a dramatic improvement in performance and reliability, enabling the most demanding applications to run faster and more efficiently," said Greg Amrofell, Windows Client product manager, Microsoft Corp.  "We've heard the demand for 64-bit MATLAB from our customers and believe that the availability will accelerate the transition from 32- to 64-bit computing.  By offering MATLAB support for Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, The MathWorks is certainly providing a next-generation computing tool."

MATLAB 7.2 also provides users with access to improved capabilities for analyzing and visualizing time series data, including an interactive graphical interface.  By enabling users to manipulate data and time together, the software minimizes the risk of potential errors and reduces the time required to visualize and analyze various applications including flight test data, the hourly price of a stock, engine diagnostics, and drug discovery.

"We've had a strong pulse of interest in 64-bit Windows systems among MATLAB users," said Lisa Kempler, director of MATLAB products, The MathWorks.  "During our MATLAB 7.2 pre-release program, one out of eight users downloaded the 64-bit Windows version.  Using MATLAB with Windows XP Professional x64 Edition will enable our customers to take full advantage of their software and hardware investments."

Pricing and Availability

MATLAB 7.2 is available immediately for Microsoft Windows, UNIX/Linux, and Macintosh platforms. It is part of The MathWorks Release 2006a which also includes a new version of the MATLAB Compiler, Statistics Toolbox and Neural Networks Toolbox. Commercial US list prices for MATLAB start at $1,900.
