The MathWorks and Mentor Graphics (NASDAQ: MENT) today announced the upcoming release of The MathWorks Link for ModelSim®, which provides a co-simulation interface between The MathWorks MATLAB® and Simulink® system-level design environments with ModelSim®, Mentor Graphics' high-performance, high-capacity HDL simulator. With Link for ModelSim, engineers can efficiently verify and co-simulate ModelSim RTL-level designs using MATLAB and Simulink. The interface eliminates the errors and time associated with manual methods by automating the verification process. The product has completed a successful beta test and is expected to ship in late November.

Link for ModelSim is the first product to integrate MathWorks products directly into a hardware verification flow. System engineers use MATLAB and Simulink to create behavioral models of hardware systems that serve as executable specifications for implementation. Link for ModelSim provides system-level verification, software test benching, component modeling, and analysis capabilities. As a result, engineers can easily verify the HDL implementation against its original specification in MATLAB or Simulink, and gain rapid insight into HDL implementation problems. Allowing users to incorporate HDL into system-level simulations dramatically reduces the need for manual verification, saving time and minimizing the potential for errors.

Link for ModelSim is fully compatible with FPGA-based DSP design flow products from Xilinx and Altera. Engineers can now use MATLAB, Simulink, and ModelSim together with these products to verify and test large-scale FPGA implementations of signal processing systems. This compatibility allows users to move through the design, implementation, and verification phases quickly to isolate and correct any design flaws early and easily.
