Lab Automation and Instrument Control
One
of the challenges in lab automation is to assemble equipment from
different vendors into a single, homogeneous machine that can be quickly and easily
programmed to automate a variety of tasks and to collect and analyze data
from different sources. Typically, lab automation platforms consist of an
articulated arm, fluid handling robots, detection devices, sensors and actuators
controlled through digital or analog I/O boards, or multifunction I/O boards
and other data acquisition devices.
Researchers use MATLAB® to integrate apparatus control, data acquisition, and data analysis. With minimal programming knowledge they can use MATLAB software to build scripts and functions that are readable and modifiable. They can also communicate with and collect data from external hardware and analyze that data in the integrated MATLAB environment.
