Process Automation Systems and Industrial Controls

For optimal safety and efficiency, control systems for process and discrete manufacturing and building automation require supervisory and loop-level control strategies.

Controls engineers save time and reduce reliance on testing of actual systems by using MATLAB® and Simulink® environments to create process models. These models enable them to develop and test control strategies and algorithms and train operators. They combine first-principles and data-driven models with state-of-the-art control design tools for multidomain modeling and simulation. The SimMechanics™, SimHydraulics®, and SimPowerSystems™ products let them model and simulate the dynamics of mechanical and electrical systems. With third-party products based on MathWorks software they model and simulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and detect faults.

MATLAB, Simulink software, and add-on products for classical and advanced control design and analysis help these engineers create models and design process analytics, signal filters, loop controls, and supervisory controls for a variety of industrial applications. They can apply advanced techniques, such as fuzzy logic, model predictive control, and neural networks, and use Stateflow® software to incorporate sophisticated mode, supervisory, and fault-detection techniques into the control strategy. They then automatically generate C code for prototype testing and production loop controllers, distributed control systems (DCS), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems.

OPC connectivity lets them test and verify control system algorithms against process simulations or the actual plant, capture data, and perform sophisticated analyses.
