This bug has been fixed for Release 14 (R14). For previous releases, please read below for any possible workarounds:

This is a bug in MATLAB 6.1 (R12.1PV1) in the way that Excel through ActiveX handles Japanese character strings. Our development staff is investigating this issue.

Currently, to work around this issue, set the value of cells in Excel to a Japanese string one at a time rather than in a block.
