Why does MATLAB crash when I try to run a LEGO NXT example in Simulink v7.9 (R2012a)?

I have a simple model for LEGO NXT. When I go to Tools -> Run on Target Hardware -> Run, it downloads the model fine to my LEGO NXT but then it crashes. Why is this so?

Please make sure the firmware on the LEGO NXT brick is up-to-date. You can update the firmware by following the below steps:
1. Make sure the NXT brick is connected to the computer.
2. Open the Simulink model and click on "Tools" in the menu bar
3. Click on "Run on Target Hardware"
4. Select "Update Firmware..."
Please make sure that that LEGO NXT does not get disconnected while the firmware is being updated.
