I want to know whether the 32 or 64-bit version of MATLAB will be installed by default from the DVD. I would also like to know how to have the 32-bit version of MATLAB installed on my 64-bit Windows computer.

By default, the MathWorks installer on the Windows DVD will detect your system architecture and install the appropriate MATLAB version for your machine. On 64-bit Windows systems, it will install the 64-bit version of MATLAB by default.

If you would like to install the 32-bit version, you will need to manually start the 32-bit MATLAB installer. This can be performed by running the setup.exe file from the /bin/win32 folder on the DVD (for versions R2010a and older, in the win32 folder). If you are an administrator or a licensed end user with download permissions, you can also download the 32-bit version of MATLAB by signing into your account on the following website:

I had troubles with some PERL routines inside the Matlab folder due to the paranthesis in the path "Program files (86)" under Windows 64 and Matlab 2008a to 2011b. Therefore I've installed Matlab in a new folder "C:\Program_".

Note: MATLAB R2016a and later have no support for Windows 32. MATLAB R2015b is the last version that supported Windows 32.

Which MATLAB version are you trying to install, and on which operating system?

Note: the newly released MATLAB R2016a and later versions are not able to run on 32 bit processors. R2015b is the last version that will run on Windows 32. R2015b itself will not run on Windows XP: if you are running that you need to go for an even earlier version.

You need to ask Mathworks Sales to trial an appropriate older version. They might not agree, since after all you would have no reason to upgrade or get maintenance on a release that is already finished.

You should be considering upgrading your operating system. If your computer is not able to handle 64 bit systems then probably your computer is underpowered for using MATLAB. The research I have done suggests that by 2007, most computers being sold were 64 bit ready, and the only systems I can find since then that cannot do 64 bits were some restricted tablets that were sold with at most 2 gigabytes of memory (for the later deluxe versions; normally those were sold with 512 megabytes or 1 gigabyte.)
