What kind of smoothing does imregister() use before registration? It seems that it uses ITK mex files for registration but there is no citation. Is there any link where imregister() is properly explained or some papers ?

It seems that it uses ITK mex files for registration but there is no citation. Is there any link where imregister() is properly explained or some papers ? I am working on 3d MRI images and imregister() is failing badly in some cases. I wanted to try ITK but it seems imregister() actually uses ITK as its core. It would be very nice if someone can give me pointer to what sort(and extend) of smoothing does imregister() performs to minimze the chance to be caught it local minima.
