Can you tell me more about reset input function in Encoder Input???

I'm using Encoder Input block in real-time windows target. I have connected A and B output of the encoder and apply discrete derivate to get angular velocity of motor. It goes. But, if i tried connect A, B and C (zero, index pulse) output values are wrong. In help gate reset input function Enables encoder counting. Can you tell me how??? Thx
