Why does the patch function change the look of my plots/axes?

I just started using the patch function. I'm using it to compare flight test data to Simulink-calculated data. I want to shade the area around the flight test data lines to see if the desktop model falls within certain tolerances. So far it's working well and doing what I want except for one problem:
Why does the patch function changes the appearance of my plots/axes? It makes the grid lines more faint and it looks like I lose two edges on the boxes around my legends. Does anyone know why?
