Why does matlab 'decode' function takes so much time ?

Hi,
I have been using RS codes to with the support of matlab inbuilt 'encode' and 'decode' functions. I have noticed that these functions consume a long time to process. But in reality the complexity of those algorithms is not very high when I refer the actual algorithms (such as Barkley and Messy).
Can someone please explain why does these functions consume a long time ?
