Can I discretize a PDE in time with the pdepe solver?

hello, i'm trying to solve PDE with the pdepe solver. I know that it spacially discretizes the PDE and solves the ODES obtained in the only time variable. To define my process I would need to do the inverse process, therefore discretize the PDE in time and solve the ODES in the space domain. Does anyone know if it's possible and how to do?
