image resolution of exported images

Hello,
I have some MATLAB simulation results which are intended for publishing in a journal. But when I export the images (graphs) to a .png format, I see that the quality of the image suffers. The image has to fit into a two-column format prescribed by the journal, and I would like to have the best clarity and resolution possible while exporting the image to either png or pdf format from MATLAB. How can this be acheived? Any suggestions?
TIA Vinod

Thanks for your suggestion. I think Waterloo looks like the answer. But when I downloaded the bundle, I see that the MATLAB code for Waterloo has a bunch of .m files nested within folders. How can I integrate this with MATLAB R2013B?

Go to the Home tab in MATLAB. Click on Set Path. Browse to the waterloo folder and then click save path. If that doesn't work, ask Malcolm Lidierth at http://waterloo.sourceforge.net/waterlooFX/ or http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/contributors/1477-malcolm-lidierth
