Every time I go to the release page and click download this release I get you need to be associated with an active license to download products and updates. Visit the license center to associate with a license. I go to the license center. I have a license that I just bought about a month ago and it has basically been a waste of $90 seeing I cant even launch MatLab without it crashing. When I click download products on the license center page it takes me to version 2014a which is the broken one.

That sounds like you have purchased the R2014a Student Version. Then the explaination would be the current R2014b is not available for you, as this is for professional users only.
And when you speak about MATLAB not starting, please have a look http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/159016 at the top of the page and see whether you have installed the Mac Yosemite OS. There is a patch for R2014a. Try it.

Thanks the patch appears to have fixed the problem.
Will the student version of MatLab ever get the new releases for free or will it stay on the version I bought?

"Ever" is a big word :-D Please understand this is a Business Topic and not a good Topic for this technical Forum.
