So I'm trying to run a program for the code a just wrote, and as I call the fnction to run (>> solve_1new('foo',[1 2 3 0],2,50)) I get an error message "Undefined function 'solve_1new' for input arguments of type 'char'."??? What does this mean? I tried changing the function name and had the same problem. I would appreciate any help

You didn’t say anything about the function or how you wrote it or defined its arguments, but it’s not expecting a string for the first argument.
You get the same error thrown with this line:
q = sin('x');
