Can I change marker type according to a value

I have a set of data that has three values, and a master list that is a combination of a few different classes that i need to distinguish. Is there anyway that I can set the marker type in a variable so vary automatically?
How can I get these different classes of data to show up as different shapes without having to split them by hand and overlay them?
