matlab license upgradation from one Version to Another

13 views (last 30 days)
Hi MathWorks,
We have a license for the matlab R2012b and we have currently installed R2012b in our machines. Recently we have bought new matlab version (r2014a) and the license. So, If we are installing the new version of matlab in our machines and replace the current license file(R2012b) with matlab R2014a license.
Can we revert back the license to R2012b later on by uninstalling R2014a and reinstalling R2012b?
If yes , please mention the steps to be followed to revert back to previous version.

Did you buy a new license or extended your maintenance service on the existing one?

When you have an older release - e.g. R2012b in your case - installed and then plan to install a newer release (here R2014a or R2014b) using the same license, you can simply install it in parallel to your existing installation. You do not have to do anything with the license file of the older installation.
Technically, I always recommend to work with the two releases in paralell, as typically you will not upgrade all you code and models at one point in time, but only when you need to make changes. I recommend working in different working directories!

I'm pretty sure you can install multiple versions and just use up one "activation", but you can verify by calling them. I often keep one or two old versions on my computer just in case I need to go back to them, and they still work. If it's been uninstalled, then I think you can reinstall it if you still have the installers (try it and see or else call and ask the Mathworks). Here's the official answer from the Mathworks: http://www.mathworks.com/matlabcentral/answers/89168-matlab-engine-without-matlab-license#answer_125028
But you should really get the R2014b version. Since you are installing a "new" version (at least new to you ), why install an already obsolete version? Just get the latest one.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Upon updation to newer software, the license file will be placed under (C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2014a\licenses) file and the older license will go obselete (C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2012b\licenses)
Uninstalling and re installing will just replace the software version from the newer version to older ones. But, the license file will be still that of the newer one (R2014a)(C:\Program Files\MATLAB\R2014a\licenses).So, will this still work as now we are using R2012b software with the license of R2014a?
Basically the question I wanted to ask is, will the earlier license (R2012b) be still active(working) once we upgrade to the newer version.

Check the "My Licenses" item on the Support section of mathworks.com to determine this. If it doesn't list your license, contact Customer Service.
