can any one explain what is vertex index in bu-4dfe database and for what purpose vertex index can be used in the emotion recognition in 3d/4d models.

vertex index is a field used in OBJ file, so there is no way to be used for expression recognition. Here, I assume you're asking "shape index" (SI), which is calculated from curvature (K1, K2), they do provide some information for facial expression.
