Is MATLAB serial port buffer FIFO?

I am trying to stream data from sensors into MATLAB to do real-time data-processing, but I don't know if the serial port buffer is FIFO, because I want to get continuous data. I mean,if the buffer is filled,is it the data at the "bottom"(came in first) of the buffer that will be discarded, or the new data to be sent into the buffer?
