Matlab unable to quit on Ubuntu 14.04

After starting Matlab, everything seems to be working perfectly, I can execute commands, run scripts, etc. Everything except one thing: exiting Matlab. Commands "exit" or "quit" fail to do the job, just like clicking on the close button. Moreover if I attempt quitting by any of these methods, it will not accept any commands anymore (I can still type in the command window but I cannot execute it).
