ddeinit Fails After Ten Uses

I use dde to transfer data from Matlab to Excel (using ddeinit followed by ddepoke and finally ddeterm). When using R2008b 64-bit, after ten uses of this sequence ddeinit fails to initiate the 11th conversation. I have tried restarting matlab several times, and every time it fails on the 11th conversation. I have no such problems using R2008b 32-bit. Does anybody know what is causing this for the 64-bit application?
