not a valid adaptor

I created the stub adaptor as described in the Image Acquisition Toolbox Adaptor Kit User Guide and managed to get it compiled with Visual C++ 2010 Express on my 64-bit machine... as a Win32 target. When I use imaqregister(), however, it says the dll is not a valid adaptor... then asks if I used the Toolbox to build it. (there is no way to answer: yes). I tried it as an x64 project as well... but in that case the compiler can't find kernel32.lib during linking. I can't find it either so we agreed on that. Any way to find out Why MATLAB doesn't think it is valid? I tried to load a dll from the manufacturer of the camera (Redlake MotionPro HS-3) but got the same answer that it is not valid.
