Opening MATLAB application on Mac OSX Yosemite

The application will not start up. Every time I click on the MATLAB application a window appears. It's titled "Error Starting Desktop". It has a large red circle with a white X inside.
A couple of the first lines on the code are: java.lang.NullPointerException com.mathworks.widgets.WindowsWidgetFactory$SearchAndClearButton.anyText(WindowsWidgetFactory.java:187)
