Unexpected exception when launching MATLAB R2009a in Mountain Lion

After updating my MacBook Pro Operating System from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion, I reinstalled my stand-alone version of MATLAB R2009a. After getting my license information, whenever I try to launch MATLAB, I get the error message: There was an unexpected exception: null
I did download and install JAVA 8, but that didn't help.
How do I fix this problem?
