Interfacing MATLAB with Real World Fieldbus Remote I/O Blocks

Has anyone had any experience with or know how to go about implementing a fieldbus protocol remote I/O system (MODBUS TCP/IP, DevicNet etc.) with MATLAB?
These are very common communications protocols for interfacing with distributed industrial I/O systems used in factory automation. I am hoping someone has worked with these and can provide information on the best tools and approaches to interface to these I/O systems.
