adding a slider to a figure GUI when GUI exceeds figure boundary

Sliders (or scrollbars) are such a common necessity so that one can view a document, webpage or GUI that is larger than the window that it's contained within. Therefore, I expected it to be an easy task to add a horizontal slider bar to my Guide developed GUI. Unfortunately, initial search results are turning up solutions that are not as simple as I had hoped. Suggestions?
