App package does not show accents in GUIs

Hello all, I am having issues packaging and App using Matlab R2015a.

The GUIs included in the App have several texts (figure titles, uicontrol objects etc) containing accents. When the App is opened, the characters with the accents are not shown. If the GUIs are opened directly, the accents are displayed. All the GUIs were created programmatically.

Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Thanks in advance for any answers.

When you created the accents, did you do that in Unicode with (for example) UTF-8? Or did you use only characters in the range 0 to 255? Or did you use characters in the range 0 to 65535 ?

I just wrote the strings with the accents in it, i'm not 100% what you mean... here is a code simple with accents:

f=figure('Visible','off','Position',[100,100,100,100],...
    'Name','Optimización accents test');

The property "Name" is a string with an accent in the word "Optimización". When the App is packed, the figure opens correctly and everything works well, except the figure title ("Name" property) is shown as "Optimizacin accents test". Notice the "ó" is missing.

That 'ó' is char(243) so using it should be compatible with everything.

I wonder whether somehow it is a font problem?

I see what you mean, but the weird thing is that it does work when the gui is launched directly (say from a script). So I don't think I am missing any fonts.

I was thinking more like that the packaging process was manipulating the font and getting it wrong.

Try this one that I packaged in R2014a . I built it with getenv('LANG') being en_CA.ISO8859-1 and getenv('MWLOCALE_TERMINAL_ENCODING') shows UTF-8

The source is just

function accent
  figure('Position', [100,100,300,100], 'Name', 'Optimización accents test')
end

It would be interesting to see if it works on your system. If it does, then take that source and package it and see if the result works for you; if repackaging produces a non-functional version then we can start comparing the meta-data, and send me your repackaged version to see what happens on my system.

I installed your package and it showed the accents fine. Then I packed the source code above, again it worked fine.

Then I tried packing my code and it still doesn't work, so this gets even weirder.

Do you want me to attach it or anything?

Yes, it would be interesting to see a specific example of something that is failing. I will also try re-packaging it on my system.

I have been trying a bit and it doesn't make sense at all, there is no code in my GUIs that in any way relates to this issue. I have given up on it, there is not enough bang for the buck to give time to it in my opinion.
