Scatterplot with multiple vertical histograms

Hello,
I am analyzing categorical effects in a factorial design and would like to make figures similar to those created by the function scatterhist to visualize the response distribution for each category. The difference is that I only need histograms for the response variables, i.e. I only want histograms on the vertical axis since the x-axis denotes the effect category (coded as an integer). The effects I'm looking at have from 2 up to 8 categories.
Ideally, I would like to have a histogram directly next to each set of responses, which would mean two or more histograms per plot, so that the responses from each category can all be seen in the same figure.
Is there also some way to use the information in the plot() command for histograms to obviate the need for extracting individual vectors for the histograms for each category response? Since this is a factorial design, I would like to avoid having to identify each row in the response vector corresponding to category 1 of effect 1, category 2 of effect 1, and so on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks!

Making custom plot types in Matlab is very, very difficult. To my knowledge, the plot you are looking for does not exist in the standard set, and as such, it will require extensive programming to make said plot.
