How to load large arrays from Excell and assign to variable names?

I have dozens of large arrays (e.g. 2x100)defined in Excell I would like to import into MATLAB and assign to a variable name. I know data can be imported vi XLSREAD but I don't see how to assign that data to a variable name. I need the named array to persist between session.
