Did it work before you've updated the Java? What operating system and Matlab version are you using? Are the help files stored locally or on a network drive? Does "doc" work without inputs?

In MATLAB version as later as R2007b+, if the MATLAB software is installed in a path that contains special character, such as white space in C:\Program Files\MATLAB, the "doc some_function" won't be able to load the help document.
You could re-install the MATLAB version, avoiding the special character in the folder. Or move the entire help directory to somewhere else which doesn't contain special characters, and set it as the MATLAB docroot.

Sounds strange. I've used MATLAB on versions both before and after R2007, installed to the program files folder, and I don't recall ever having that problem.

Good point, which keeps me honest. I am partially correct. The special character is not white space, rather, it's the '+' sign, as some may install MATLAB as R2007b+. Here is the bug report.
