How do I further analyze an imported figure?

Hello, I received a file that is a figure created in MatLab. It is a painting with a overlay of data points indicating where a study participant looked at a given period of time over 30seconds. I am trying to import this figure, form sections within the figure (like a grid), and count the number of data points in each square of the grid. I am having a LOT of trouble with the code for this; can anyone help me?

Of course you're having trouble - because that is not the way to do it. Don't import the figure. Import the actual data that was used to build the figure. Have the other code's author export that to a .mat file, not a figure. This would be so much easier.
