Fix for Linux GUI rendering problem?

I'm experiencing a problem with the 2015b GUI rendering, where I periodically get ghost text boxes that become stuck (see attached). I must restart MATLAB to get them to disappear, but given enough time, new boxes will appear during my editing, and persist until I close MATLAB.
Perhaps related, perhaps not: The quick help text box (the one that appears when you hover over an orange-squiggled bit of code in the editor), does not show any text, and instead shows solid gray.
I'm running Debian 8.2 w/Gnome Wayland, utilizing the default Intel video driver (Lenovo T450s) that was installed when I installed the OS.

The bit about the quick text box showing solid has been reported a few times to be related to Unity, that it goes away if Unity is turned off.

Sorry, I do not know anything about Unity other than this narrow context.
