disp format for strings?

Hi,
Is there a way to get the general matlab disp format for strings? I'm looking for a way to convert a number to a string that echoes the current disp format. num2str and mat2str don't do this, and (perhaps I missed it) I can't find anything in the s/fprintf documentation that gives me that option.
Thanks for any help you can offer. Best,
Sam

get(0,'Format') and analyze the returned string.
There is no printf/sprintf format specifier to say "match the current format setting"
