How to give texts as input data to a neural network?

Hi I'm new to neural networks and trying to develop an arithmetic problem solver using matlab neural networks. To do that I have to give a mathematical word problem as input data. when I use nntool it does not allow the texts to be taken as inputs.please help me. thank u..
